Do you often find yourself looking around your home and feeling completely overwhelmed at the amount of ‘stuff’ that needs putting away, or simply don’t know where to start?
‘HELP ME’ is emanating from your whole body! We’ve all been there, but honestly, it’s not as daunting as it seems. But First STOP PROCRASTINATING!
Decluttering your home will 100% make you mind less cluttered. It will reduce your anxiety and it will make being at home a much more pleasurable place to be. I was recently asked ‘Do you have a particular method that you use when decluttering?’ I straight away said ‘No, my services are completely bespoke and I tailor them to each client’ But actually I do have a method.
I suppose as someone who has always been a bit meticulous about how tidy my house is, I just thought that it was an internal skill I had, and that I just go into autopilot. But I thought about it, and I’d like to share my method with you.
The Mrs Everything Method
10 Steps to Decluttering your home – therefore your mind!
- Make a plan, starting with your priorities. Where shall I start? The wardrobe, the kitchen, the kid’s room? Do one room at a time.
- Take a deep breath, and take some before pics. I promise you won’t regret it. And make sure you take after pics too.
- Black bags/boxes. One for Rubbish, One for the Charity shop and One for the eBay pile.
- When you start a room, take everything out of the room that doesn’t belong and put in the hallway/on the stairs to take care of later. This will help make things clearer and you can see what actually needs doing.
- Put everything away that has a place. Clothes, shoes, medication packs, coats, make up. The less you have on a work surface, floor, table, the less cluttered your home will look.
- Consolidate your stuff. For instance, all tools go in the same place (you don’t need a hammer in the knife and fork drawer), put nail varnishes in one tidy box, stationery in one drawer etc… If everything has it’s own place, you will always know where to find it. And if you want to be super anal, get a label maker (am I going too far for the novices out there?)
- Assess whether you need 1500 CDs from the 1990s, 100’s DVD’s or Books on display (it’s the 21st century people), 2 blenders (just in case one breaks eh?), lids from pots you no longer own. Chuck it!
- Over the door storage hangers and hooks will give you added space to hang towels, dressing gowns, clothes not yet ready for the laundry bin etc, and will stop you throwing stuff on the ‘Chairdrobe’, floor or end of the bed.
- BASKETS/BOXES – These are key to your new clutter free home! You can put them in shelving units, on top of the wardrobe, inside of cupboards, in fact, bloody everywhere! This helps keep everything together and stops the risk of you overstuffing spaces. Plus it hides everything from view.
- Apply these rules.
If it doesn’t fit or you haven’t worn it for over a year, it goes into one of them bags. If you don’t love it, use it or wear it or it’s broken, you know what to do.Don’t throw anyway sentimental things. If they mean something to you, they belong in your home!
Now, go forth and get your CLUTTER FREE home back!!!
But if that sounds rather too much for your busy life, and you just don’t have the inclination to do it, Mrs Everything will be much obliged to bring the Calm in your Home… Along with lots of storage solutions!!!
